I have a bin of paintings that need work... this is one from last year that I wasn't happy with... I remember the day well as it was the day after the election and I was stunned by the results...I "called in sick" to my investment club lunch and headed for Big Sur where my friend Randall was painting. As we blocked in our paintings, two of the best west coast painters walked by us:, Laurie Kersey and Brian Blood ... I'm a big fan of their work. We said our hellos and the power couple set up below us on the hill where we could see them paint. They didn't stay long, saying the water was too foamy- maybe why my painting was lacking... a bit too flat and faint.
So the painting sat in the "unfinished bin" for a year and I finally returned to the scene this week- almost a year later. I met Randall-again- this time at the Barnyard in Carmel so we could consolidate in one car- , and we stopped by Brian's new gallery there and chatted with him a bit. I'm sure he remembered us (not!). I marveled at how he can go back to the same coastal locations and produce vastly different paintings. We drove 15 minutes to Garapata and I painted over my dried painting from last year.
I think a couple things helped this painting- One might be that it was just a better, clearer day to paint, but it also really helped to stop by Brian Blood and Laurie Kersey's studio see how they approached painting the ocean. Impossible to duplicate, but easy to get inspired by great work.
